Why is interior design important? And when do I need to bring an interior designer into the design process?
July 2024
“Interior design is not merely about creating visually stunning spaces; it is about crafting environments that nurture our souls, inspire our minds, and elevate our spirits. It is a journey of discovery, a testament to the power of creativity and imagination, and a celebration of the profound connection between our innermost selves and the world we inhabit.” Yas Lightowler

Why is interior design important?
Our homes stand as sanctuaries of solace and serenity, where we dream, and where we live. Creating these sanctuaries, personal and family spaces away from the clamour of the modern world, has become increasingly necessary.
Like many, I embarked on a quest to understand the profound significance of interior design when crafting these spaces – a journey that led me to uncover the timeless truths that underpin its importance.
When I was redesigning the interiors of my own home a few years ago, I found myself grappling with questions that echoed the sentiments of countless others as I traversed the corridors and rooms: Why does interior design matter? And when is the opportune moment to invite an interior designer into the fold of our creative endeavours?
The answers, I discovered, lie not only in the aesthetics but also in the profound impact that design exerts on our well-being, productivity, and emotional resonance. At its core, interior design transcends the mere arrangement of furniture and selection of colours; it is a potent alchemy that transforms spaces into living, breathing reflections of our innermost selves.
The transformative power of interior design is also a conduit for self-expression, allowing us to imbue our surroundings with our unique personalities, passions, and aspirations. Whether through curated collections of art, cherished mementos, or bespoke furnishings, our homes become living narratives that unfold the stories of our lives.
It is this level of self-expression that facilitates the creation of truly individual environments that deeply impact the way we feel. A skilful interior designer will understand the feelings that each project should evoke and create a positive space that reinforces these whilst improving quality of life, nurturing souls and inspiring minds.
Why do I need to hire an interior designer?
Engaging an interior designer guarantees proficiency in spatial planning, material selection, and aesthetic coordination, resulting in harmonious and refined outcomes.
Interior designers provide bespoke solutions, access to exclusive resources, and invaluable industry insights. This saves time and alleviates stress, and ultimately delivers a personalised and professionally executed design tailored to individual preferences and lifestyle.
An interior designer will also be experienced in drawing out and reflecting your personality, values and lifestyle in the design scheme.
“In crafting interiors, we transcend the mundane, turning ordinary spaces into extraordinary reflections of unique stories. This journey is an ode to individuality – a vibrant symphony where personal essence intertwines with the art of living. As we dive into personal expression, playfulness, and dynamism, we discover the magic in creating spaces that mirror the soul.” Yas Lightowler
When do I need to bring an interior designer into the design process?
If interior design plays a pivotal role in the way we live in our homes, when is the right time to enlist the expertise of an interior designer? The best results are achieved when we are brought in at the beginning of the project alongside the architect or architectural designer.
Engaging an interior designer cannot be an afterthought but an integral part of the architectural journey. From the moment a vision is conceived to the final touches of decor, an interior designer brings knowledge, understanding, and trust to every stage of the process. Read more about how an interior designer and architect work together in my article.
By involving a designer from the project's inception, we ensure that our vision is translated into reality with precision and finesse. From space planning and layout optimisation to material selection and lighting design, a designer's expertise serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path towards a space that is both functional and beautiful.
If you want to make changes to your home’s interiors to better reflect you and your lifestyle, or need interior design advice for a property you are buying, we would be delighted to help.
